A lost Paradise in Vietnam

Perhaps, everyone knows about Nha Trang where is one of the most beautiful beach in Vietnam and some island around there. But I’m sure that very few people know about Whale Island (L’Île de la Baleine) where you could see the whales, beautiful corals, enjoy the peaceful beach with tropical wind and sunshine with blue sky, it is such a wonderful paradise.

Two hours North of Nha Trang, an island was found by marine officer Dayot, he wanted to make a marine harbor at the end of the nineteenth century and gave his name to the archipelago on French maps. He and his people started by camping there after hard trekking in Highlands and they have built Whale Island resort in 1997 and that is the only one on the island.

1 – HOW TO GO THERE?

If you are not in Vietnam, you will take two flights. First, fly from your country to Ho Chi Minh city (HCMC) then fly from there to Cam Ranh – Nha Trang (should check on Vietjet Air for cheap ticket to fly from HCMC to Nha Trang, it would be around 21$ – 50$), or if you want to save money you can take a bus from HCMC to Nha Trang for 10$/ticket (book bus ticket on this website https://futabus.vn/en)

When you book the Whale Island resort (book on Booking.com) , you should contact them to book their daily Shuttle bus too. The daily Shuttle Bus starts at 9:00AM and 2:00PM (Nha Trang to Whale Island), departure from The Rainbow Diver – Crazy Kim Bar Restaurant at 19 Biet Thu Street, Loc Tho Ward, Nha Trang City, Khánh Hòa, Việt Nam (this is their new address but on the website they did not update yet). It takes 2 hours to arrive at the boat landing, then we will go to Whale island by boat in 20 minutes. You pay 20$/ Person for one way (shuttle bus and boat transfer), same price for the way back to Nha Trang.

2- WHAT DO WE NEED TO BRING THERE?

A – Food

Whale Island resort is distinct from other resort because they don’t serve the meal when you need, they only make their meal fixation as Breakfast – Lunch – Dinner with their own taste, and then no more food for you during the day if you are hungry. Hence, you should buy the snack, fruit, dry provisions, instant noodle,… something you can keep in 2 days up and save you when you are hungry but the restaurant not open yet. Besides, their meal is quite expensive, for each meal like Lunch is 12$ – Dinner is 16$ (Free Breakfast), so bring your food could help you save money and if you don’t like their food taste. Don’t worry about the drinks, the bar serves 24/24 with many options and good price.

B – Diving stuff

The best thing about Whale island is its underwater landscape, with transparent water you could see the coral from the surface, the diversities of coral as well as the other components of the submarine fauna, like nudibranchs, contribute to the reputation of the place. Such a wonderful place for diving, so why don’t we bring our diving stuff if you own one?

You also can rent the diving stuff at the resort, it is cheap.

C – Your travel kit

Here is a desolate and waste island, even they built in 20 years. Therefore you should have careful preparation as medicine, anti-mosquito cream, sun cream, your personal stuff,…

3 – WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO GO THERE?

From March to July, because we can enjoy the sunny season on the island. It is very nice with blue sky and blue ocean. Weather is amazing with tropical wind and warm sunshine, if you want to relax and get a tan, here is the best choice!

B – Hiking

In addition to the main beach, there are Pearl beach and Mango bay on the island. If you stay more than 2 days you should go hiking to discover them.

Ask the receptionist to give you a map. On the road, there are white marks which help you in case you get lost during the hike.

C – Snorkeling

You can rent diving mask, snorkel and fins for the whole day in 3$ then go to see lovely coral and funny fishes around the restaurant – bar area.

Furthermore, every day at 9am, there is a boat come to pick you up to another coral area. It takes 30 minutes to go there and only cost 7$/person. You should book with the receptionist before one day you want to go, if not they may don’t organize the snorkeling trip with a few people.
